The chokeberry (aronia melanocaroa) is a bushy plant which grows to 2 meters height. Its fruits are tinny dark blue berries, gathered in groups from 10 to 15 berries. It looks like blueberries. It originate form North America, from where was brought in Europe. Because of its resistance on low temperatures ( it can survive on -47 °C) it is cultivated in a countries such like Finland, Sweden and Russia, in moist woods and swamps.
According to ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) they have the highest antioxidant properties and protection on tissues; the plasm contained in the berry is about 3000-5000 ORAC units. It is a fruit with rich nutritive components and high level of antioxidants (polyphenols).
The most common from the polyphenols are the flavonoids, which are responsible for the color and the taste, than they have vitamins C, A, E, B2, B6 and folic acid, and one very rare vitamin, vitamin P; from the mineral they have calcium, mangan, phosphor, iodine. Also have fruit sugar – sorbitol.
